Students from Gujarat Technological University (GTU) will receive training in Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a part of a project initiated by the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK under Newton Bhabha Fund. GTU is one of the collaborators in the nationwide initiative on enhancing AI skills and research under the fund. Speaking about the same, Dr Navin Sheth, Vice-Chancellor, GTU, said, "One of the objectives of the project is to make a research group, which will work in a specific domain like Healthcare, Agriculture, Space Research, CyberSecurity, Education, Video Processing, Audio and Natural Language Processing, Business, Banking, Crime, Social Media Analytics, Entertainment, Brain-Computer Interface and Network Simulation. Under this project, faculty members will get training on deep learning and AI technologies without any cost and sabbaticals will be offered to faculty members." AICTE has recommended all of its 10,000 approved institutions to associate with the project.

Artificial Intelligence will now help unravel the mystery of human brain Latest News & Updates at Daily News & Analysis

Scientists are using emerging artificial intelligence (AI) networks to enhance their understanding of one of the most elusive intelligence systems: the human brain. The researchers are learning much about the role of contextual clues in human image recognition. By using artificial neurons - essentially lines of code, software - with neural network models, they can parse out the various elements that go into recognising a specific place or object. "The fundamental questions cognitive neuroscientists and computer scientists seek to answer are similar," said Aude Oliva from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. "They have a complex system made of components - for one, it is called neurons and for the other, it is called units - and we are doing experiments to try to determine what those components calculate," said Oliva, who presented the research at the annual meeting of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society (CNS).

NASA explores artificial intelligence for space communications Latest News & Updates at Daily News & Analysis

#artificialintelligence

NASA scientists are planning to use artificial intelligence to better manage the increasing communications between its spacecraft and the Earth. NASA spacecraft typically rely on human-controlled radio systems to communicate with Earth. Cognitive radio, the infusion of artificial intelligence into space communications networks, could meet demand and increase efficiency, researchers said. "Modern space communications systems use complex software to support science and exploration missions," said Janette C Briones, from the NASA's Glenn Research Center in the US. "By applying artificial intelligence and machine learning, satellites control these systems seamlessly, making real-time decisions without awaiting instruction," said Briones.

Building your real career out of AI Latest News & Updates at Daily News & Analysis

There are several varieties of machine learning skills that are in demand in the global marketplace today. The skill that is most in demand is the ability to come up with fundamental innovations in machine learning, and implement them to solve practical problems. For a research career in artificial intelligence (AI), you need a PhD, preferably from a well-known program, and research competence as demonstrated by published papers, implemented solutions and peer acceptance. For those at the forefront of research, the sky is the limit, and seven-figure USD salaries are not infrequent. The next tier of demand is for people who can build practical implementations, especially in collaboration with a cutting-edge research team.

New AI system can predict earthquakes Latest News & Updates at Daily News & Analysis

#artificialintelligence

Scientists have developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system to successfully predict earthquakes, an advance that may help prepare for natural disasters and potentially save lives. The study, published in the journal Geophysical Review Letters, identified a hidden signal leading up to earthquakes, and used this'fingerprint' to train a machine learning algorithm to predict future earthquakes. Researchers from University of Cambridge in the UK and Boston University in the US studied the interactions among earthquakes, precursor quakes and faults, with the hope of developing a method to predict earthquakes. Using a lab-based system that mimics real earthquakes, they used machine learning techniques to analyse the acoustic signals coming from the'fault' as it moved and search for patterns. Researchers used steel blocks to closely mimic the physical forces at work in a real earthquake, and also records the seismic signals and sounds that are emitted.

New algorithm to teach robots human etiquettes Latest News & Updates at Daily News & Analysis

#artificialintelligence

Scientists have developed a new machine-learning algorithm to help robots display appropriate social behaviour in interactions with humans. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are making virtual and robotic assistants increasingly capable in performing complex tasks, researchers said. For these "smart" machines to be considered safe and trustworthy collaborators with human partners, however, robots must be able to quickly assess a given situation and apply human social norms, they said. Now, researchers at Brown University and Tufts University in the US have created a cognitive-computational model of human norms in a representation that can be coded into machines. They developed a machine-learning algorithm that allows machines to learn norms in unfamiliar situations drawing on human data.

Weiqi is a 2500-year-old board game from China. In English, the game is called Go. Played on a large square board, with 19*19 squares (chess is 8*8), Go is a two-player game of strategy. Each player tries to win by encircling the other. Given the number of squares and moves, it is believed that there are more moves than atoms in the known universe. The game is complex, and it takes great skill to master.
